Apps Crashing

Overview

Apps may crash due to corrupted files, outdated software, missing updates, driver conflicts, or system errors. This guide covers the most common causes and how to fix them.

Common symptoms

Possible causes

  • Corrupted app files
  • Outdated Windows version
  • Conflicting background processes

  • Missing or corrupted system files

Step 1 – Restart your PC

A restart clears temporary conflicts and frees system resources.

Step 2 – Update Windows

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Windows Update.
  3. Install all available updates.

Step 3 – Update the app

Outdated apps may crash due to compatibility issues.

  1. Open the app’s update tool or store page.
  2. Install any available updates.

Step 4 – Repair or reset the app

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Select the app and choose Advanced options.
  4. Click Repair. If that fails, click Reset.

Step 5 – Close background processes

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Look for high CPU, memory, or disk usage.
  3. End unnecessary tasks.

Step 6 – Check for driver updates

Graphics and chipset drivers can cause app instability when outdated.

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Update graphics, chipset, and storage drivers.

Step 7 – Run System File Checker

  1. Press Start, type cmd.
  2. Right‑click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
  3. Type:
    sfc /scannow
  4. Press Enter.

Step 8 – Reinstall the app

If the app is corrupted beyond repair, reinstalling often resolves the issue.

Step 9 – Test in a new user account

  1. Open Settings > Accounts.
  2. Select Family & other users.
  3. Create a new local account.
  4. Log in and test the app.
