Apps Not Opening

Overview

Apps may fail to open due to corrupted files, missing updates, account issues,
or conflicts with background processes. This guide covers the most common
causes and how to fix them.

Common symptoms

Possible causes

  • Corrupted app files
  • Outdated Windows version
  • Damaged user profile

Step 1 – Restart your PC

A simple restart can resolve temporary app conflicts or background process issues.

Step 2 – Check for Windows updates

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Windows Update.
  3. Install any available updates.

Step 3 – Run the App Troubleshooter

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Other troubleshooters.
  4. Run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter.

Step 4 – Reset the Microsoft Store cache

  1. Press Start, type wsreset.
  2. Right‑click and choose Run as administrator.
  3. A blank window will appear and close automatically.

Step 5 – Repair or reset the app

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Select the app and choose Advanced options.
  4. Click Repair. If that fails, click Reset.

Step 6 – Check background processes

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Look for frozen or duplicate processes.
  3. Right‑click and select End task if needed.

Step 7 – Run System File Checker

  1. Press Start, type cmd.
  2. Right‑click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
  3. Type:

    sfc /scannow
  4. Press Enter.

Step 8 – Reinstall the app

If the app is corrupted beyond repair, reinstalling often resolves the issue.

Step 9 – Test in a new user account

  1. Open Settings > Accounts.
  2. Select Family & other users.
  3. Create a new local account.
  4. Log in and test the app.
