Ethernet Not Working

Ethernet may stop working due to cable issues, router problems, incorrect network settings, driver failures, or hardware faults. This guide walks through the most common causes and how to fix them.

Common Symptoms

  • No internet connection through Ethernet
  • “Unidentified network” message
  • Ethernet shows “No network access”
  • Yellow triangle or red X on the network icon
  • Ethernet works on other devices but not this one

Possible Causes

  • Loose or damaged Ethernet cable
  • Router or modem issues

Step 1 – Check the Ethernet Cable

  1. Ensure the cable is firmly plugged into the PC and router.
  2. Try a different Ethernet cable if available.
  3. Test the cable on another device to confirm it works.

Step 2 – Restart Your Router and Modem

  1. Unplug both devices from power.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Plug the modem back in and wait for it to fully start.
  4. Plug the router back in and wait for it to fully start.

Step 3 – Check the Ethernet Adapter Status
