This guide explains how to use the built-in Reset feature in Windows 10 and Windows 11 to reinstall Windows while keeping your personal files.
Important Notes Before You Begin
- Your personal files (such as documents, pictures, and videos) are kept if you choose the Keep my files option.
- Most apps and programs you installed will be removed.
- Windows settings will be reset to their defaults.
- It is still a good idea to back up important files to an external drive before you start.
Step 1: Open the Reset This PC Option
- Click Start and open Settings.
- Click Update & Security (Windows 10) or System > Recovery (Windows 11).
- Under Recovery, find Reset this PC.
- Click Get started.
Step 2: Choose “Keep My Files”
- When asked, choose Keep my files.
- Windows will show you what will happen, including which apps will be removed.
- Review the information carefully.
Step 3: Choose Cloud Download or Local Reinstall
- On newer versions of Windows 10/11, you may see:
- Cloud download – downloads a fresh copy of Windows from Microsoft.
- Local reinstall – reinstalls Windows from files already on your PC.
- Choose the option that works best for you. Cloud download may use more data but can fix corrupted system files.
Step 4: Confirm Your Choices
- Windows will show a summary of what will be reset.
- Click Next or Reset when you are ready.
- Your PC will restart and the reset process will begin.
Step 5: Wait for the Reset to Complete
- The reset process can take anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour, depending on your system.
- Your PC may restart several times.
- When it finishes, you will see the initial Windows setup screens.
Step 6: Set Up Windows Again
- Follow the on-screen instructions to choose your region, keyboard layout, and sign in with your Microsoft account (if desired).
- After setup, your desktop will appear.
- Your personal files should still be in your user folders (such as Documents and Pictures).
- Reinstall any apps and programs you need.
Use this reset option when your system is unstable, slow, or corrupted, but you want to keep your personal files.
