Scanner Not Working

Page Purpose

This page provides instructions for resolving scanner problems where a scanner does not scan, is not
recognized by Windows, or produces poor quality scans. These instructions apply to both standalone
scanners and all‑in‑one printer‑scanner devices on Windows computers.

Symptoms

  • Scanner not detected by Windows
  • Scanner shows offline or unavailable
  • Scanning software cannot find the device
  • Scans are blank, streaked, or distorted
  • Scanner freezes during scanning
  • “WIA error” or “TWAIN error” messages
  • Network scanner not appearing on the network

Root Cause (Plain Language)

Scanners require power, proper connections, functioning drivers, and correct software to operate. When any
of these components fail, the scanner stops working or produces incorrect output.

Scanner problems occur due to:

  • Loose or faulty cables
  • Disabled or corrupted scanner drivers
  • WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) service not running
  • Incorrect network configuration
  • Dirty scanner glass or internal dust
  • Outdated or missing manufacturer software

This guide addresses both hardware connection issues and software‑related scanner failures.
