- Corrupted system files
- Driver conflicts
- Startup program issues
- Disk errors
- External devices interfering with boot
Step 1 – Disconnect external devices
Unplug USB drives, printers, external hard drives, and other accessories. Faulty or incompatible devices can prevent Windows from loading.
Step 2 – Perform a hard reboot
- Hold the power button until the PC turns off.
- Wait 10 seconds.
- Turn the PC back on.
Step 3 – Boot into Safe Mode
If Windows cannot load normally, Safe Mode may still work.
- Turn on the PC.
- When the spinning dots appear, hold the power button to force shutdown.
- Repeat this 2–3 times until Automatic Repair appears.
- Select Advanced options.
- Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options.
- Select Startup Settings and choose Safe Mode.
Step 4 – Uninstall recent updates
Failed updates are a common cause of spinning dots.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Uninstall updates.
- Remove the most recent quality or feature update.
Step 5 – Run System File Checker
- Open Command Prompt from Advanced options.
- Type:
sfc /scannow - Press Enter.
Step 6 – Run Check Disk
Disk errors can prevent Windows from loading.
- Open Command Prompt.
- Type:
chkdsk C: /f /r - Press Enter.
Step 7 – Disable Fast Startup
Fast Startup can cause boot loops on some systems.
- Boot into Safe Mode.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Power Options.
- Click Choose what the power buttons do.
- Uncheck Turn on fast startup.
Step 8 – Perform a startup repair
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Startup Repair.
Step 9 – Restore from a System Restore point
If available, this can undo the issue without affecting files.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select System Restore.
