Start Here

Follow these steps in order. Each step is safe and reversible.

1. Restart the Computer

A restart clears temporary update files and resets the update service.

  1. Save your work.
  2. Restart Windows normally.
  3. Try checking for updates again.

2. Check Internet Connection

Updates may fail if the connection is unstable.

  1. Ensure Wi‑Fi or Ethernet is connected.
  2. Restart your router if needed.
  3. Pause any large downloads or streaming.

3. Run Windows Update Troubleshooter

Windows can automatically detect and fix common update problems.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters.
  3. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.

4. Free Up Disk Space

Updates may fail if the system drive is low on space.

  1. Open Settings → System → Storage.
  2. Delete temporary files.
  3. Empty the Recycle Bin.
  4. Remove unused apps or large files.

Tip: Keep at least 10–15 GB free for major updates.

5. Restart Windows Update Services

Sometimes update services stop responding.

  1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, press Enter.
  2. Find and restart these services:
  • Windows Update
  • Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
  • Windows Installer

6. Clear Windows Update Cache

Corrupted update files can block new updates.

  1. Press Win + R, type services.msc.
  2. Stop Windows Update and BITS.
  3. Open File Explorer and go to:
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
  1. Delete all files inside this folder.
  2. Restart the services.

7. Check Date and Time Settings

Incorrect system time can cause update failures.

  1. Open Settings → Time & language.
  2. Enable Set time automatically.
  3. Enable Set time zone automatically.

8. Disable VPN or Proxy

VPNs and proxies can block update servers.

  1. Disconnect from any VPN.
  2. Disable proxy settings in Settings → Network & Internet.

9. Install Updates Manually

If automatic updates fail, manual installation may succeed.

  1. Open the Microsoft Update Catalog.
  2. Search for the KB number of the failed update.
  3. Download and install the update manually.

10. Check for Driver Issues

Outdated or incompatible drivers can block updates.

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Look for yellow warning icons.
  3. Update or reinstall problematic drivers.

11. Run System File Checker

Corrupted system files can prevent updates from installing.

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow

12. Run DISM Repair

DISM repairs deeper system image corruption.

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
  2. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Verification Steps

After applying fixes:

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Open Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. Confirm updates download and install normally.

If updates install successfully, the issue is resolved.

If the Issue Persists

Persistent update failures may indicate:

  • Severe system file corruption
  • Damaged Windows installation
  • Incompatible drivers or software
  • Hardware issues affecting storage or memory

Next steps:

  • Perform an in‑place Windows repair install
  • Check drive health using diagnostic tools
  • Temporarily remove third‑party antivirus
  • Review update error codes for specific causes
  • As a last resort, reinstall Windows
