Battery Health Check (Desktop) Tool

Battery Health Check (Desktop) Tool

If your desktop PC shuts down unexpectedly, restarts on its own, loses power, or behaves unpredictably, this tool will help you diagnose the issue.

Desktops do not have batteries — they rely entirely on the power supply unit (PSU) and the electrical outlet. This tool checks the most common causes of desktop power problems.

1. What problem are you experiencing?

  • My desktop shuts down randomly
  • My desktop restarts on its own
  • My desktop won’t power on
  • My desktop loses power during gaming or heavy use
  • My desktop makes electrical buzzing or clicking sounds
  • My desktop turns on but no display appears

2. Power Source & Outlet Check

Answer the following:

  • Is your desktop plugged directly into the wall or a power bar?
  • Is the outlet loose or worn?
  • Do other devices lose power on the same outlet?
  • Are you using a surge protector or UPS?

Tip: Loose or worn outlets are one of the most common causes of intermittent power loss.

3. Power Supply Unit (PSU) Health

Your PSU is responsible for delivering stable power to your system. Check for:

  • Burning smell
  • Clicking or buzzing noises
  • Fan not spinning
  • PSU overheating
  • PSU older than 5 years
  • System shuts down under load (gaming, video editing, etc.)

If any of these apply, your PSU may be failing.

4. Internal Power Connections

Inside the PC, check:

  • 24‑pin motherboard connector
  • 8‑pin CPU power connector
  • GPU power cables
  • SATA power cables
  • Loose or partially seated connectors

A single loose cable can cause random shutdowns.

5. GPU & High‑Load Power Issues

If shutdowns happen during gaming or heavy tasks:

  • Your GPU may be drawing more power than the PSU can supply
  • Your PSU wattage may be too low
  • Your PSU may be degrading

Example: A 450W PSU powering a modern GPU can cause instant shutdowns.

6. Overheating Check (Desktop)

Desktops can shut down to protect themselves. Check:

  • CPU temperature
  • GPU temperature
  • Dust buildup
  • Fans not spinning
  • Thermal paste age (over 3 years)

If temperatures exceed safe limits, the system may power off.

7. Generate Summary

Your summary will include:

  • Likely cause of the power issue
  • Recommended fixes
  • Whether the PSU is suspect
  • Whether overheating is involved
  • Whether internal cables need checking
  • Whether outlet or surge protector is the issue
