Some Android phones allow you to move apps to an SD card to free up internal storage. This guide shows how to check if your device supports it, how to move apps, and what limitations you should be aware of.
1. Check if your phone supports moving apps
Not all Android devices or apps support SD card storage. Many system apps and pre‑installed apps cannot be moved.
- Insert an SD card into your phone.
- Go to Settings → Apps.
- Select an app and check for a Storage option.
- If supported, you will see a Change button under Storage.
If the Change button is missing, the app cannot be moved.
2. Move an app to the SD card
If your device supports it, you can move part of the app’s data to the SD card.
- Go to Settings → Apps.
- Select the app you want to move.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Change.
- Select SD card.
- Tap Move.
Moving may take a few seconds depending on the app size.
3. Format SD card as internal storage (Adoptable Storage)
Some phones allow you to format the SD card as internal storage, letting apps install directly to it.
- Go to Settings → Storage.
- Select your SD card.
- Tap Format as internal (if available).
- Follow the prompts to complete setup.
This erases all data on the SD card and encrypts it for your device only.
4. Move apps after formatting as internal storage
Once the SD card is set as internal storage, apps can be moved more easily.
- Go to Settings → Apps.
- Select an app → Storage.
- Tap Change → choose SD card.
Not all apps will support this, but many will.
Limitations to keep in mind
- Some apps cannot be moved (system apps, widgets, launchers).
- Apps may run slower on a low‑quality SD card.
- Removing the SD card can break app functionality.
- Adoptable storage SD cards cannot be used in other devices.
Moving apps to an SD card is a great way to free up internal storage, especially on budget devices with limited space.
