Motherboard Error Codes

These are the most common motherboard‑related Windows hardware error codes, what they mean, and how to fix them.

Motherboard Error Codes & Fixes

Error Code What It Means Fix
0x124 – WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR General hardware failure. Often VRM, chipset, or motherboard power delivery. Check VRM temps, remove overclock, inspect motherboard for damage.
0x9C – MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION Motherboard detected a serious hardware fault (bus, chipset, or PCIe). Reseat components, inspect PCIe slots, check chipset cooling.
0xA – IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Interrupt controller or chipset timing issue. Reset BIOS, update BIOS, check for unstable overclock.
0xF – CPU/Chipset Cache Error Chipset or CPU cache returned corrupted data. Update BIOS, check VRM temps, inspect motherboard power phases.
PCIe Bus Error Motherboard PCIe lane or slot failure. Reseat GPU, try another PCIe slot, inspect motherboard for bent pins.
Chipset Thermal Warning Motherboard chipset overheating. Improve airflow, clean dust, check chipset fan (if present).
BIOS Corruption Detected Motherboard BIOS failed integrity check. Reflash BIOS, use dual‑BIOS recovery, reset CMOS.
CMOS Checksum Error CMOS settings corrupted or battery failing. Replace CMOS battery, reset BIOS settings.
Embedded Controller Error Motherboard EC firmware malfunction. Update BIOS/EC firmware, power cycle system.
VRM Overcurrent / Undervoltage Motherboard VRMs cannot supply stable power. Remove CPU overclock, check VRM cooling, inspect motherboard for damage.
