If your Android phone’s camera won’t open, shows a black screen, freezes, or displays errors like “Camera failed” or “Can’t connect to camera,” this guide covers the most common fixes. Camera issues can be caused by software glitches, app conflicts, or hardware failure.
1. Restart the phone
A simple reboot often clears temporary camera errors.
- Hold the Power button.
- Tap Restart.
- If frozen, hold Power + Volume Down for 10–20 seconds.
If the camera works after reboot, it was a temporary software glitch.
2. Close other apps using the camera
Only one app can use the camera at a time. If another app is using it, the camera may fail to open.
- Open the recent apps screen.
- Close all apps, especially:
- Snapchat
- TikTok
- QR scanner apps
Then reopen the Camera app and test again.
3. Clear Camera app cache
Corrupted cache files can cause the camera to crash or show a black screen.
- Go to Settings → Apps.
- Select Camera.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache.
This does not delete your photos or settings.
4. Clear Camera app data (if needed)
This resets the Camera app to default settings.
- Go to Settings → Apps → Camera.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear data.
This may reset camera modes and preferences but won’t delete photos.
5. Check camera permissions
If permissions are disabled, apps cannot access the camera.
- Go to Settings → Apps.
- Select the app you’re trying to use (Camera, Instagram, etc.).
- Tap Permissions.
- Ensure Camera permission is allowed.
6. Disable other apps that may interfere
Some apps can block or override the camera.
- Screen overlay apps
- Flashlight apps
- Face filter apps
- Third‑party camera apps
Uninstall or disable these apps and test the camera again.
7. Check for system updates
Camera bugs are often fixed in Android updates.
- Go to Settings → System → System update.
- Install any available updates.
8. Test the camera in Safe Mode
Safe Mode disables third‑party apps. If the camera works here, another app is causing the issue.
- Hold the Power button.
- Tap and hold Power off.
- Tap OK to enter Safe Mode.
If the camera works in Safe Mode, uninstall recently installed apps after restarting normally.
9. Check for hardware damage
Physical damage can cause the camera to stop working entirely.
- Look for cracks on the camera lens.
- Check for dust or debris inside the lens area.
- Check if the phone was dropped or exposed to moisture.
- Rear camera works but front camera doesn’t (or vice‑versa).
Hardware damage requires repair — software fixes won’t help.
10. When repair is required
If the camera still doesn’t work after all steps above, the likely causes are:
- Damaged camera module
- Loose or damaged camera connector
- Mainboard failure in the camera circuit
- Water damage
These issues require professional repair. Camera module replacement is the most common fix. If the phone is under warranty or insurance, contact the manufacturer or repair shop.
