Having trouble setting up a new smart home device? Work through these steps to get it connected and working.

1Before you start — what you need ready▼Do you have all of the following ready?
Most smart devices need: the manufacturer’s app installed on your phone, your Wi-Fi password, and an account with the manufacturer.

2Check your phone settings before setup▼
Many setup failures are caused by missing phone permissions — not the device itself.
Is your phone connected to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi during setup?Most smart devices only support 2.4GHz during initial setup. Make sure your phone is on 2.4GHz not 5GHz.
Does the app have these permissions on your phone?Check: Phone Settings → Apps → [App name] → Permissions

3Put the device in setup/pairing mode▼Is the device showing it is in setup mode?
Check your device manual for how to enter setup mode — usually a button hold of 3-5 seconds until a light flashes.

4Common setup failure reasons▼Which of these might apply to your situation?
VPNs almost always prevent smart device setup — disable any VPN before attempting setup.
