Android No Service / SIM Not Detected

If your Android phone shows “No Service,” “SIM Not Detected,” “Emergency Calls Only,” or fails to read the SIM card, this guide covers the most common causes and fixes. These steps help resolve SIM card issues, network problems, carrier errors, and hardware faults.

1. Restart your phone

A simple reboot often restores network service and reloads SIM card settings.

  • Hold the Power button → tap Restart.
  • If frozen, hold Power + Volume Down for 10–20 seconds.

2. Toggle Airplane Mode

Airplane Mode resets all cellular connections.

  • Swipe down the quick settings panel.
  • Turn Airplane Mode on.
  • Wait 5 seconds, then turn it off.

This forces the phone to reconnect to the mobile network.

3. Reseat the SIM card

A loose or misaligned SIM card is one of the most common causes of “No Service.”

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Remove the SIM tray.
  • Take out the SIM card and inspect it.
  • Reinsert it firmly and evenly.
  • Turn the phone back on.

Make sure the SIM card is not cracked, bent, or scratched.

4. Clean the SIM card and tray

Dirt or oxidation on the SIM contacts can prevent proper detection.

  • Wipe the gold contacts with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Check the SIM tray for dust or debris.

Avoid using liquids or abrasive materials.

5. Try the SIM card in another phone

This helps determine whether the issue is with the SIM card or the phone.

  • Insert your SIM card into another phone.
  • Check if it gets service.

If the SIM doesn’t work in another phone, it may be damaged or deactivated.

6. Try another SIM card in your phone

This helps confirm if the issue is with your phone’s SIM reader.

  • Insert a working SIM card from another device.
  • Check if your phone detects it.

If no SIM works, the SIM reader may be faulty.

7. Check network settings

Incorrect network mode or carrier settings can cause “No Service.”

  • Go to Settings → Network & Internet → Mobile network.
  • Ensure Preferred network type is set to:
    • 5G/4G/3G (Auto)
    • 4G/3G/2G (Auto)
  • Enable Automatically select network.

Manual network selection can cause connection failures in some areas.

8. Check for carrier outages or account issues

Your carrier may be experiencing an outage or your account may be restricted.

  • Check if other phones on the same carrier have service.
  • Verify your plan is active.
  • Check for unpaid bills or account suspension.

Carriers sometimes deactivate SIM cards after long inactivity.

9. Reset network settings

This resets all cellular, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth settings to default.

  • Go to Settings → System → Reset options.
  • Tap Reset Wi‑Fi, mobile & Bluetooth.
  • Restart the phone.

This does not delete personal data — only network settings.

  • SIM not detected in any phone.
  • SIM card is scratched, cracked, or bent.
  • Phone shows “Insert SIM” even after reseating.
  • SIM works intermittently.

In these cases, you may need a SIM replacement from your carrier.

11. When it’s likely a phone hardware issue

  • No SIM works in your phone.
  • SIM tray is damaged or loose.
  • Phone was dropped or exposed to water.
  • SIM reader pins are bent or corroded.

These symptoms point to a damaged SIM reader or internal antenna.
Professional repair may be required.
