How to Format a USB Drive

This guide shows you how to safely format a USB drive in Windows. Formatting erases everything on the drive, so make sure you have backed up any important files before you begin.

Before You Start

Quick Format (Fast)

Use this when the drive is working normally and you just want to erase it.

  • Open File Explorer
  • Right‑click the USB drive
  • Select “Format”
  • Choose a file system (FAT32, exFAT, or NTFS)
  • Check “Quick Format”
  • Click “Start”

Full Format (Slow but Safer)

Use this when the USB drive is acting strange, slow, or may be corrupted.

  • Open File Explorer
  • Right‑click the USB drive
  • Select “Format”
  • Choose a file system
  • Uncheck “Quick Format”
  • Click “Start”

Choosing the Right File System

If the USB Drive Won’t Format

  • Try a different USB port
  • Restart the computer
  • Use Disk Management
  • Delete and recreate the partition
  • Try a full format instead of quick format
  • Check if the drive is write‑protected
