Android Phone Storage Full

If your Android phone keeps saying “Storage full,” “Not enough space,” or apps won’t update or install, this guide shows you how to safely free up space. These steps work on all Android phones and help you clear unnecessary files, manage apps, and prevent storage from filling up again.

1. Check what’s using your storage

Start by seeing which categories are taking up the most space.

  • Go to Settings → Storage.
  • Review categories like Apps, Photos & videos, Audio, Downloads, and System.

This helps you know where to focus your cleanup.

2. Clear app cache (safe and quick)

Cached data can grow to several gigabytes over time.

  • Go to Settings → Apps.
  • Select a large app (Chrome, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, etc.).
  • Tap Storage → Clear cache.

This does not delete personal data — only temporary files.

3. Delete unused apps

Many apps take up hundreds of MBs or even several GBs.

  • Go to Settings → Apps.
  • Sort by Size.
  • Uninstall apps you no longer use.

Removing just a few large apps can free up a lot of space instantly.

4. Move photos and videos to cloud storage

Photos and videos are usually the biggest storage hogs.

  • Open Google Photos.
  • Enable Backup.
  • After backup, tap Free up space to remove local copies.

This can free several gigabytes instantly.

5. Clean the Downloads folder

The Downloads folder often contains old files you no longer need.

  • Open the Files app.
  • Go to Downloads.
  • Delete large or unnecessary files.

PDFs, installers, and old media files often pile up here.

6. Remove duplicate or large media files

Some phones include built‑in tools to find large or duplicate files.

  • Open the Files by Google app (recommended).
  • Tap Clean.
  • Review suggestions for:
    • Large files
    • Duplicate files
    • Temporary files
    • Old screenshots

Files by Google is one of the best cleanup tools for Android.

7. Move files to an SD card (if supported)

If your phone supports SD cards, you can move photos, videos, and some apps.

  • Insert an SD card.
  • Go to Settings → Storage.
  • Tap Move files to SD card (if available).

Not all apps can be moved, but media files move easily.

8. Clear system cache (Recovery Mode)

Clearing the system cache can free space and improve performance.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Hold Power + Volume Up to enter Recovery Mode.
  • Select Wipe cache partition.
  • Reboot the phone.

This does not delete personal data — only temporary system files.

9. When storage keeps filling up

If your storage fills up again quickly, possible causes include:

  • Apps storing large hidden data (social media, messaging apps)
  • Automatic downloads from messaging apps
  • System logs or corrupted files
  • Malware generating junk files

Clearing cache, disabling auto‑downloads, or uninstalling heavy apps usually fixes recurring storage issues.
