Overview of major macOS releases, core changes, architecture shifts, and long-term platform impact.

From Classic Mac OS to macOS

Before macOS, Apple shipped Classic Mac OS (System 1–9). In 2001, Apple replaced it with Mac OS X,
built on a UNIX foundation (Darwin), NeXTSTEP technologies, and the Aqua user interface. That
transition created the modern macOS architecture still in use today.

Mac OS X era (10.0–10.8)

The Mac OS X era introduced the core technologies that define macOS today: Aqua, Quartz, the Dock,
Finder redesigns, early 64-bit support, and a UNIX-certified base.

Mac OS X 10.0 “Cheetah” (2001)

  • Foundation: First public release of Mac OS X, built on Darwin and NeXTSTEP.
  • Interface: Introduced Aqua, the Dock, and a new Finder.
  • Limitations: Slow, incomplete feature set, and limited driver/app support.

Mac OS X 10.1 “Puma” (2001)

  • Performance: Major speed improvements over 10.0.
  • Usability: Better hardware support and more stable daily use.
  • Adoption: First version many users considered usable full-time.

Mac OS X 10.2 “Jaguar” (2002)

Mac OS X 10.5 “Leopard” (2007)

Mac OS X 10.6 “Snow Leopard” (2009)

Mac OS X 10.7 “Lion” (2011)

  • Features: Mission Control unified Exposé and Spaces.
  • Change: Removed Rosetta, ending support for PowerPC apps.

OS X 10.8 “Mountain Lion” (2012)

  • iCloud: Deeper cloud integration for documents and settings.
  • Notifications: Notification Center introduced on macOS.
  • Security: Gatekeeper to control app sources and reduce malware risk.

OS X era (10.9–10.11)

Apple shortened the name to “OS X” and began offering free upgrades, focusing on efficiency,
battery life, and tighter integration with iOS.

OS X 10.9 “Mavericks” (2013)

  • Licensing: First free OS X upgrade.
  • Performance: Memory compression and better power management.
  • Finder: Finder tabs and improved multi-display support.

OS X 10.10 “Yosemite” (2014)

  • Design: Flat, iOS-style UI redesign.
  • Continuity: Handoff and phone/SMS relay with iOS devices.
  • Integration: Stronger ecosystem tie-in with iCloud and iOS.

OS X 10.11 “El Capitan” (2015)

  • Refinement: Focus on stability and performance.
  • Graphics: Metal for Mac to improve graphics performance.
  • Productivity: Split View for side-by-side full-screen apps.

macOS era (10.12–10.15)

Apple rebranded OS X to macOS to align with iOS, watchOS, and tvOS, and continued tightening
security, iCloud integration, and 64-bit architecture.

macOS 10.12 “Sierra” (2016)

  • Assistant: Siri added to the Mac.
  • Storage: Optimized Storage to free disk space using iCloud.
  • Continuity: Auto Unlock with Apple Watch.

macOS 10.13 “High Sierra” (2017)

  • File system: APFS introduced for SSDs.
  • Media: HEVC and HEIF support for modern video and images.
  • Graphics: Metal 2 for better GPU performance and VR support.

macOS 10.14 “Mojave” (2018)

  • Appearance: System-wide Dark Mode and Dynamic Desktop.

macOS 10.15 “Catalina” (2019)

  • 64-bit only: Dropped all 32-bit app support.

macOS 11 and later (Big Sur → Redwood)

Starting with macOS 11, Apple moved away from the 10.x scheme, redesigned the interface, and
fully embraced Apple Silicon with major performance and efficiency gains.

  • Versioning: First major jump to version 11.
  • Design: Large UI overhaul with new icons, controls, and translucency.

macOS 12 “Monterey” (2021)

macOS 13 “Ventura” (2022)

macOS 14 “Sonoma” (2023)

Major architecture transitions

PowerPC to Intel (2006)

  • Transition: Apple moved from PowerPC CPUs to Intel x86.
  • Compatibility: Rosetta 1 translated PowerPC apps to run on Intel Macs.
  • Impact: Enabled faster hardware and broader software support.

Intel to Apple Silicon (2020)

  • Transition: Apple introduced ARM-based M-series chips.

32-bit to 64-bit (completed in 2019)

  • Result: Older 32-bit apps require virtualization or older macOS versions to run.

Support and lifecycle overview

  • Support window: Apple typically supports around three macOS versions at a time with security updates.

  • Hardware cutoff: Older Macs lose support as Apple raises minimum hardware requirements for new releases.
