Android Phone Won’t Connect to PC (USB File Transfer)

If your Android phone won’t connect to your PC, doesn’t appear in File Explorer, or only charges without showing files, this guide walks you through the most common fixes. USB transfer issues are usually caused by cable problems, port issues, or the wrong USB mode.

1. Use a data‑capable USB cable

Many USB‑C cables are charge‑only and cannot transfer data.

  • Try a different USB‑C cable.
  • Use the cable that came with the phone (if available).
  • Avoid cheap or thin cables — many lack data wires.

If the phone only charges but never appears on the PC, the cable is the most common cause.

2. Change the USB mode on the phone

When you plug in your phone, Android defaults to “Charge Only.” You must switch it manually.

  • Unlock your phone.
  • Swipe down the notification panel.
  • Tap the notification that says Charging this device via USB.
  • Select File Transfer (MTP).

If you don’t see the USB notification, try a different cable or port.

3. Try a different USB port on the PC

Some USB ports provide power but no data, or have driver issues.

  • Use a USB port directly on the PC — not a hub.
  • Try both USB‑A and USB‑C ports if available.
  • Avoid front‑panel ports on desktops (often unreliable).

4. Restart both devices

A simple restart can fix driver or connection glitches.

  • Restart the phone.
  • Restart the PC.
  • Reconnect the cable after both are fully booted.

5. Check the phone’s charging port

Dust or lint in the USB‑C port can block data pins.

  • Use a flashlight to inspect the port.
  • Gently remove lint with a wooden or plastic toothpick.
  • Blow out dust with short air bursts.

If the cable feels loose or wobbly, the port may be worn or damaged.

6. Enable File Transfer in Developer Options (if needed)

Some phones require enabling USB debugging or default USB configuration.

  • Go to Settings → About phone.
  • Tap Build number 7 times to enable Developer Options.
  • Go to Settings → System → Developer options.
  • Find Default USB configuration.
  • Select File Transfer.

This forces the phone to always use MTP when connected.

7. Update or reinstall USB drivers on Windows

Windows may fail to load the correct MTP drivers.

  • Right‑click the Start button → Device Manager.
  • Expand Portable Devices or Android Device.
  • Right‑click the device → Uninstall.
  • Unplug the phone and plug it back in.

Windows will reinstall the correct drivers automatically.

8. Try a different PC

This helps determine whether the issue is with the phone or the computer.

  • If the phone works on another PC → the issue is with your computer.
  • If it fails on all PCs → the issue is with the phone or cable.

9. Signs of hardware damage

  • Phone only charges at certain angles.
  • USB‑C port feels loose or wobbly.
  • Phone was dropped or exposed to moisture.
  • PC disconnects and reconnects repeatedly.

These symptoms point to a failing USB port or damaged internal connector.

10. When repair is required

If none of the steps above fix the issue, the likely causes are:

  • Damaged USB‑C port
  • Broken internal data pins
  • Faulty USB controller on the mainboard
  • Severe software corruption

These require professional repair. If the phone is under warranty, contact the manufacturer or carrier.
