Android Hotspot Not Working

If your Android hotspot is not working, won’t turn on, won’t share internet, or other devices can’t connect, this guide covers the most common causes and fixes. These steps help resolve carrier restrictions, phone settings issues, device conflicts, and connection errors.

1. Toggle Hotspot off and on

A quick reset often fixes temporary hotspot issues.

  • Swipe down the quick settings panel.
  • Turn Hotspot off.
  • Wait 5 seconds, then turn it back on.

This refreshes the hotspot service and clears minor glitches.

2. Restart your phone

A reboot resets network services and often restores hotspot functionality.

  • Hold the Power button → tap Restart.
  • If frozen, hold Power + Volume Down for 10–20 seconds.

3. Check if Mobile Data is turned on

Hotspot requires mobile data — it won’t work on Wi‑Fi alone.

  • Swipe down the quick settings panel.
  • Make sure Mobile Data is enabled.

If mobile data is off, the hotspot cannot share internet.

4. Check if your carrier allows hotspot use

Some carriers block hotspot usage on certain plans or throttle it after a limit.

  • Check your mobile plan details.
  • Look for hotspot restrictions or data caps.
  • Try contacting your carrier if unsure.

If hotspot is blocked by your carrier, it will not work regardless of settings.

5. Change the hotspot name and password

Corrupted or incompatible hotspot settings can prevent devices from connecting.

  • Go to Settings → Network & Internet → Hotspot & tethering → Wi‑Fi hotspot.
  • Change the Hotspot name (SSID).
  • Change the Password.

Some devices refuse to connect to old or cached hotspot profiles.

6. Switch hotspot frequency (2.4GHz / 5GHz)

Some devices cannot connect to 5GHz hotspots.

  • Go to Hotspot settings.
  • Find AP Band or Hotspot frequency.
  • Switch between 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

2.4GHz works with more devices and has better range.

7. Turn off VPN

VPNs can block hotspot sharing or cause devices to lose internet access.

  • Disable any active VPN apps.
  • Try enabling the hotspot again.

Many VPNs prevent hotspot traffic from routing correctly.

8. Disable Battery Saver or Power Saving Mode

Battery Saver can block hotspot functionality to reduce power usage.

  • Go to Settings → Battery.
  • Turn off Battery Saver or Power Saving Mode.

Hotspot requires full network access, which Battery Saver may restrict.

9. Reset network settings

This resets Wi‑Fi, mobile data, and Bluetooth settings to default.

  • Go to Settings → System → Reset options.
  • Tap Reset Wi‑Fi, mobile & Bluetooth.
  • Restart the phone and try the hotspot again.

This does not delete personal data — only network settings.

10. When it’s likely a carrier issue

  • Hotspot option is greyed out.
  • Hotspot turns off immediately after enabling.
  • Other devices connect but have no internet.
  • Your plan does not include hotspot data.

Contact your carrier if these apply.

11. When it’s likely a phone hardware issue

  • Hotspot toggle won’t turn on at all.
  • Phone overheats instantly when hotspot is enabled.
  • Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth also malfunction.
  • Phone was dropped or exposed to water.

These symptoms point to a damaged Wi‑Fi/Bluetooth antenna or internal component.
Professional repair may be required.
