Slow Performance Fixer

Work through these checks to narrow down slow startup, lag, freezing, or applications that take too long to open.

Before making changes: save your work and restart the PC once if it has been running for a long time. This tool provides troubleshooting guidance; it does not scan or change your computer automatically.
1 Identify the slowdown type
What best describes the issue?
2 Check system resource usage

Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. On the Processes tab, sort by CPU, Memory, Disk, or GPU to identify an app using unusually high resources.

What do you see while the PC is slow?
3 Free up storage safely

Low free space can slow Windows updates, virtual memory, and app performance. Use the built-in Disk Cleanup utility, then empty the Recycle Bin if you no longer need its files.

cleanmgr

Press Windows + R, enter the command above, select temporary files you are comfortable removing, and choose OK. Avoid manually deleting system folders or the Prefetch folder.

After freeing space and restarting, did it improve?
4 Review startup and background apps

In Task Manager, open Startup apps. Disable only non-essential apps you recognize, especially those marked as having high startup impact. Do not disable security software or hardware drivers unless you are certain what they do.

What did you find?
5 Generate your troubleshooting summary

Select the answers that match your situation, then generate a prioritized next-step list.
