Android Phone Frozen / Not Responding

If your Android phone is frozen, stuck on a screen, or not responding to touch or buttons, this guide will help you unfreeze it safely. Most freezes are caused by overloaded apps, low memory, or temporary system glitches — and can be fixed quickly.

1. Try a normal restart

  • Hold the Power button for 3–5 seconds.
  • Tap Restart if the menu appears.
  • If the screen responds slowly, wait a moment — it may recover.

If the screen is completely unresponsive, continue below.

2. Force restart the phone

A force restart will not erase data — it simply forces the system to reboot.

  • Power + Volume Down for 10–20 seconds (most phones).
  • On Samsung: hold Power + Volume Down until the screen goes black.
  • On older devices: hold Power for 20–30 seconds.

If the phone vibrates or restarts, the freeze was caused by a temporary system lockup.

3. If the screen is frozen but the phone is on

Sometimes the display freezes while the system continues running in the background.

  • Try rotating the phone — if the screen rotates, the touch layer may be frozen.
  • Try pressing the Home or Back buttons (if available).
  • Try plugging the phone into a charger — some devices unlock when charging starts.

If nothing responds, perform a force restart.

4. After the phone restarts

Once the phone boots normally, check for the cause of the freeze.

  • Go to Settings → Battery to see if an app used excessive power.
  • Update all apps in the Play Store.
  • Clear cache for apps that frequently freeze.
  • Restart the phone once more to stabilize the system.

5. If the phone freezes during a specific app

Some apps can cause repeated freezes.

  • Uninstall the app.
  • Reinstall it from the Play Store.
  • If the app is poorly optimized, consider replacing it with an alternative.

6. Freezing caused by low storage

When storage is nearly full, Android can freeze or become extremely slow.

  • Go to Settings → Storage.
  • Delete unused apps, large videos, or temporary files.
  • Move photos to cloud storage or an SD card.

Keeping at least 10–20% free storage helps prevent freezes.

7. Freezing caused by overheating

If the phone is too hot, it may freeze to protect itself.

  • Remove the case.
  • Stop charging.
  • Move the phone to a cool area.
  • Close all apps after it cools down.

8. Boot into Safe Mode (if freezes keep happening)

Safe Mode loads only system apps — useful for diagnosing app-related freezes.

  • Hold the Power button until the logo appears.
  • Immediately hold Volume Down until the lock screen appears.
  • If Safe Mode loads, uninstall recently installed apps.

If the phone works fine in Safe Mode, the issue is almost always a third‑party app.

9. Signs of hardware issues

  • Phone freezes randomly even after a factory reset.
  • Phone freezes when moved or tapped.
  • Phone was dropped or exposed to water before the issue started.
  • Battery is swollen or overheating.

These symptoms point to failing hardware such as the battery, storage chip, or mainboard.

10. When repair is required

If the phone continues freezing after all steps above, the likely causes are:

  • Failing internal storage (eMMC/UFS)
  • Power IC (PMIC) issues
  • Damaged mainboard
  • Battery failure

These require professional repair. If the phone is under warranty, contact the manufacturer or carrier.
