Android Apps Crashing

If apps on your Android phone keep crashing, closing immediately, freezing, or refusing to open, this guide will help you fix the issue. App crashes are usually caused by outdated apps, corrupted cache files, low memory, or software bugs — and most can be fixed quickly.

1. Restart the phone

A simple restart clears temporary glitches that cause apps to crash.

  • Hold the Power button.
  • Tap Restart.
  • If frozen, hold Power + Volume Down for 10–20 seconds.

2. Update the crashing app

Outdated apps are the #1 cause of crashes.

  • Open the Google Play Store.
  • Search for the app.
  • Tap Update if available.

Developers often release fixes for crash bugs in updates.

3. Clear the app’s cache

Corrupted cache files can cause apps to crash instantly.

  • Go to Settings → Apps.
  • Select the crashing app.
  • Tap Storage.
  • Tap Clear cache.

This does not delete your data — only temporary files.

4. Clear the app’s data (if crashes continue)

This resets the app to its default state.

  • Go to Settings → Apps.
  • Select the app.
  • Tap Storage.
  • Tap Clear data.

This may log you out of the app, depending on the app.

5. Check for Android system updates

System bugs can cause multiple apps to crash at once.

  • Go to Settings → System → System update.
  • Install any available updates.

Updates often include stability fixes for app crashes.

6. Free up storage space

Low storage can cause apps to freeze or crash repeatedly.

  • Go to Settings → Storage.
  • Delete unused apps or large files.
  • Move photos/videos to cloud or SD card.

Keep at least 10–20% free storage for smooth performance.

7. Check for app conflicts

Some apps conflict with others, especially cleaners, boosters, or antivirus apps.

  • Uninstall any “phone booster” or “RAM cleaner” apps.
  • Disable or uninstall third‑party antivirus apps.
  • Restart the phone.

8. Try Safe Mode

Safe Mode loads only system apps — useful for diagnosing app-related crashes.

  • Hold the Power button until the logo appears.
  • Immediately hold Volume Down until the lock screen appears.
  • If the app works in Safe Mode, another app is causing the crash.

Uninstall recently installed apps to find the culprit.

9. Reinstall the app

If the app’s internal files are corrupted, reinstalling often fixes it.

  • Uninstall the app.
  • Restart the phone.
  • Reinstall the app from the Play Store.

10. Signs of deeper system issues

  • Multiple apps crash at the same time.
  • Apps crash immediately after opening.
  • The phone freezes or restarts randomly.
  • Crashes started after a system update.

These symptoms may indicate system corruption or failing storage.

11. When repair or reset is required

If crashes continue after all steps above, the likely causes are:

  • Corrupted system files
  • Failing internal storage (eMMC/UFS)
  • Severe software bugs

A factory reset or professional repair may be required if the issue persists.
