iPhone Face ID Not Working

Face ID isn’t recognizing your face, fails repeatedly, or won’t activate at all. This can be caused by lighting issues, obstructions, software bugs, or hardware problems with the TrueDepth camera. Try these steps to restore Face ID.

1. Clean the Front Camera Area

  • Wipe the front camera and sensors with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Remove dirt, fingerprints, or smudges blocking the TrueDepth camera.

2. Remove Case or Screen Protector

  • Some cases or protectors interfere with Face ID sensors.
  • Remove them and test Face ID again.

3. Restart the iPhone

  • Hold Side button + Volume button → Slide to power off.
  • Turn it back on after 30 seconds.

4. Check Face ID Settings

  • Go to Settings → Face ID & Passcode.
  • Make sure Face ID is enabled for iPhone Unlock and other features.

5. Reset Face ID

  • Go to Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Reset Face ID.
  • Set up Face ID again in good lighting.

6. Update iOS

  • Go to Settings → General → Software Update.
  • Updates often fix Face ID bugs.

7. Check for Obstructions

  • Make sure nothing is covering your face.
  • Remove sunglasses if they block infrared light.
  • Ensure your face is fully visible to the camera.

8. When to Seek Repair

  • Face ID option is greyed out in Settings.
  • “Face ID is not available” message appears.
  • Face ID stopped working after a drop or screen replacement.

If Face ID still doesn’t work, the issue may be related to the TrueDepth camera system, dot projector, or internal hardware. A technician can diagnose the exact cause.
