GPU Error Codes

These are the most common GPU‑related Windows hardware error codes, what they mean, and how to fix them.

GPU Error Codes & Fixes

Error Code What It Means Fix
0x141 – VIDEO_ENGINE_TIMEOUT_DETECTED GPU stopped responding (driver or hardware hang). Lower GPU overclock, update drivers, improve cooling.
0x117 – VIDEO_TDR_TIMEOUT_DETECTED GPU took too long to process a frame (TDR failure). Check GPU temps, reseat GPU, reduce graphics load.
0x116 – VIDEO_TDR_ERROR Windows tried to reset the GPU but failed. Update GPU drivers, check PSU, test GPU stability.
0x119 – VIDEO_SCHEDULER_INTERNAL_ERROR GPU scheduler detected corrupted data. Reset GPU overclock, reinstall drivers, check VRAM stability.
0x1E – KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED GPU driver caused an invalid operation. Clean install GPU drivers, check PCIe slot.
0x7E – SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED GPU driver or hardware fault. Check GPU temps, reseat GPU, test VRAM.
0xD1 – DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL GPU driver accessed invalid memory. Update drivers, remove GPU overclock, test RAM.
Code 43 (Device Manager) GPU failed to start due to hardware or firmware issue. Reseat GPU, update BIOS, check PSU and PCIe power cables.
Code 31 (Device Manager) GPU driver failed to load. Reinstall drivers, check Windows updates.
PCIe Bus Error GPU cannot communicate with motherboard PCIe lane. Try another PCIe slot, reseat GPU, inspect motherboard.
VRAM Corruption Detected GPU memory returned invalid data. Lower memory overclock, improve cooling, test VRAM.
Thermal Throttle / Overheat GPU exceeded safe temperature limits. Clean fans, improve airflow, replace thermal paste.
