Touch ID isn’t recognizing your fingerprint, fails repeatedly, or doesn’t respond at all. This can be caused by dirt, moisture, software issues, or a faulty sensor. Try these steps to restore Touch ID.
1. Clean the Home Button
- Wipe the Home button with a soft, dry cloth.
- Remove dirt, oils, or moisture from your finger.
2. Restart the iPhone
- Hold Side button + Volume button → Slide to power off.
- Turn it back on after 30 seconds.
3. Re‑Enroll Your Fingerprints
- Go to Settings → Touch ID & Passcode.
- Delete existing fingerprints.
- Add new fingerprints and test again.
4. Enable Touch ID for Features
- Go to Settings → Touch ID & Passcode.
- Make sure iPhone Unlock, Apple Pay, and App Store are enabled.
5. Update iOS
- Go to Settings → General → Software Update.
- Updates often fix Touch ID bugs.
6. Remove Case or Screen Protector
- Some cases press against the Home button area.
- Remove them and test Touch ID again.
7. Reset All Settings
- Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset All Settings.
- This does not delete your data.
8. When to Seek Repair
- Touch ID stopped working after a screen replacement.
- Home button feels loose or unresponsive.
- Touch ID option is greyed out in Settings.
If Touch ID still doesn’t work, the issue may be related to the Home button sensor, flex cable, or internal hardware. A technician can diagnose the exact cause.
