Windows Activation Troubleshooter

  1. First, check the exact activation message shown by Windows.

    1. Open Settings.
    2. Select System, then choose Activation.
    3. Review the message next to Activation state.

  2. Windows normally needs an internet connection to verify a digital license or product key.

    1. Confirm that you can open a website in your browser.
    2. Disconnect any VPN temporarily, if you use one.
    3. Restart your computer and check the Activation page again.

  3. Activation can fail if the installed edition of Windows does not match your license, or if a product key has already been used on another device.

    If Windows came preinstalled on your computer, the license is often stored in the device firmware and may activate automatically after connecting to the internet.

    1. Open SettingsSystemActivation.
    2. Select Troubleshoot.
    3. Follow the instructions shown on screen.
    4. If you changed major hardware, choose the option indicating that you changed hardware recently.
