Windows 95 Installation Guide

This guide walks you through installing Windows 95 on a physical PC or virtual machine, using original media (floppy disks or CD-ROM) or ISO images.

🧩 1. System Requirements

  • CPU: 386DX or higher (486/Pentium recommended)
  • RAM: 4 MB minimum (8 MB or more recommended)
  • Storage: At least 50–100 MB free (more recommended)
  • Media: Windows 95 CD-ROM or floppy disk set, or ISO image
  • Boot media: DOS boot floppy or bootable CD (depending on hardware/VM)

💾 2. Prepare the Machine or Virtual Machine

  1. Create / prepare the machine: – For a real PC: connect CD-ROM drive or floppy drive. – For a VM (VirtualBox, VMware, etc.): create a new VM (Type: Other/Unknown, 32-bit), attach the Windows 95 ISO and a boot floppy image if needed.
  2. Set boot order: – Ensure the system boots from floppy or CD-ROM first.

📀 3. Boot to DOS Setup Environment

  1. Insert boot media: – Real PC: insert DOS boot floppy or bootable Windows 95 CD. – VM: attach boot floppy image or bootable ISO.
  2. Restart and boot: – You should see a DOS prompt like: A:\> or C:\>.
  3. Load CD-ROM drivers (if needed): – Some boot disks automatically load CD-ROM support. – If not, use a DOS boot disk with CD-ROM drivers so the Windows 95 CD is accessible (usually as D:).

🧱 4. Partition and Format the Hard Drive

  1. Run FDISK: – At the DOS prompt, type: FDISK and press Enter. – Enable large disk support if prompted (for FAT32, though early Windows 95 may use FAT16 only). – Create a primary DOS partition and set it active. – Exit FDISK and reboot with the boot disk still inserted.
  2. Format the partition: – After reboot, at the DOS prompt, type: FORMAT C: /S/S makes the drive bootable with system files. – Confirm formatting when prompted.

📂 5. Copy Setup Files (Optional but Recommended)

  1. Create a setup folder: – At the DOS prompt: MD C:\WIN95
  2. Copy installation files: – Change to the CD drive (e.g. D:) and then: COPY D:\WIN95\*.* C:\WIN95 – This lets you run setup from the hard drive, which is faster and avoids CD issues later.

▶️ 6. Run Windows 95 Setup

  1. Start setup: – If you copied files: C:\WIN95\SETUP – If using CD directly: D:\WIN95\SETUP
  2. Follow the setup wizard: – Accept the license agreement. – Enter your name and organization (optional). – Enter the Windows 95 product key when prompted. – Choose installation type (Typical is fine for most users). – Select installation directory (default: C:\WINDOWS).
  3. Hardware detection: – Setup will scan for hardware (video, sound, network). – You may be asked for driver disks or to confirm detected hardware.

🔄 7. Reboots During Installation

  1. Automatic restarts: – Setup will reboot the system several times. – Make sure the hard drive is now the primary boot device (remove boot floppy if necessary).
  2. Continue setup: – After each reboot, Windows 95 will continue configuring devices, copying files, and setting up the desktop.

🧩 8. Final Configuration

  1. Set date, time, and region: – Choose correct time zone and regional settings.
  2. Create user information: – Enter a username if prompted.
  3. Install drivers: – Video, sound, and network drivers may need to be installed manually from manufacturer disks or driver packages.

✅ 9. Post-Installation Tasks

  • Verify hardware: – Check Control Panel → System → Device Manager for any devices with warnings.
  • Install additional drivers: – For missing devices, install appropriate drivers from floppy, CD, or downloaded archives.
  • Install software: – Add essential tools (file managers, DOS utilities, classic apps, etc.).
  • Create a backup: – Once everything works, consider creating an image/backup of the installation (especially in a VM).

🆘 10. Common Issues & Tips

  • CD-ROM not detected: – Use a DOS boot disk with proper CD-ROM drivers or copy setup files to the hard drive.
  • Setup hangs during hardware detection: – Try disabling unnecessary devices in the VM or BIOS (USB, advanced sound, etc.).
  • Low memory errors: – Increase RAM in the VM settings (e.g. 32–64 MB) or ensure no extra TSR programs are loaded in DOS.
