If your Android tablet feels slow, freezes randomly, or lags during normal use, the issue is usually caused by low storage, too many background apps, outdated software, or aging hardware. Follow the steps below to improve performance.
1. Restart the Tablet
A simple restart clears temporary files and resets background processes.
- Hold the Power button and choose Restart.
- If frozen, hold Power for 10–15 seconds to force a reboot.
2. Close Background Apps
- Open the Recent Apps screen.
- Swipe away apps you’re not using.
- Too many apps running at once can slow down older tablets.
3. Check Storage Space
Low storage is one of the most common causes of lag.
- Go to Settings → Storage.
- Delete unused apps, old downloads, and large videos.
- Move photos and files to an SD card or cloud storage.
- Keep at least 20% of storage free for best performance.
4. Clear App Cache
Cached data can build up and slow down apps.
- Go to Settings → Apps.
- Select an app that feels slow.
- Tap Storage → Clear Cache.
- Repeat for apps that lag or freeze often.
5. Update the Tablet
Software updates often improve speed and fix bugs.
- Go to Settings → System → Software Update.
- Install any available updates.
- Restart after updating for best results.
6. Disable or Uninstall Problem Apps
- Apps that constantly sync or run in the background can slow the system.
- Uninstall apps you don’t use.
- Disable preinstalled apps you never open.
7. Reduce Animations
Lowering animation effects can make the tablet feel faster.
- Enable Developer Options (if available).
- Reduce animation scale values to 0.5x or turn them off.
8. Check for Overheating
Tablets slow down automatically when they get too hot.
- Remove the case to improve airflow.
- Let the tablet cool for 10–20 minutes.
- Avoid using heavy apps while charging.
9. Reset App Preferences
This can fix conflicts that cause freezing.
- Go to Settings → Apps.
- Tap the menu (⋮) and choose Reset app preferences.
- No data is deleted — only settings reset.
10. Factory Reset (Last Resort)
If the tablet is still extremely slow:
- Back up your data first.
- Go to Settings → System → Reset → Factory data reset.
- This restores the tablet to its original performance.
11. When Hardware Is the Problem
Older tablets may struggle with modern apps. Signs of hardware aging include:
- Lag even after a factory reset
- Apps taking very long to open
- Frequent freezing during simple tasks
- Battery draining unusually fast
In these cases, professional repair or replacement may be needed.
Tip: Keeping storage clean and apps updated is the easiest way to prevent lag over time.
