CPU Architecture Compatibility

macOS has transitioned through three major CPU architectures: PowerPC, Intel, and Apple Silicon. Each transition introduced compatibility layers and eventually dropped support for older hardware.

  • PowerPC (1994–2006): Supported through Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.
  • Intel (2006–present): Supported from Mac OS X 10.4.4 Tiger onward.
  • Apple Silicon (2020–present): Supported starting with macOS 11 Big Sur.
  • Rosetta 1: Allowed PowerPC apps on Intel Macs (10.4–10.6).
  • Rosetta 2: Allows Intel apps on Apple Silicon Macs (Big Sur+).

macOS Version Support by Architecture

PowerPC Macs

  • Last supported macOS: Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.
  • Unsupported starting: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
  • Notes: No modern macOS versions run on PowerPC hardware.

Intel Macs

  • Supported macOS range: Mac OS X 10.4.4 Tiger → macOS 14 Sonoma (varies by model).
  • Dropping support: Newer macOS releases gradually phase out older Intel models.
  • Notes: Some features require Apple Silicon and are unavailable on Intel.

Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, M3, etc.)

  • Supported macOS range: macOS 11 Big Sur → current.
  • Universal apps: Run natively on both Intel and Apple Silicon.
  • Rosetta 2: Runs most Intel apps seamlessly.

GPU Compatibility

macOS has moved from third‑party GPUs to fully integrated Apple Silicon graphics. Support varies by macOS version.

  • PowerPC/early Intel: ATI and NVIDIA GPUs supported through macOS High Sierra.
  • Metal requirement: macOS Mojave requires Metal‑capable GPUs.
  • eGPU support: Intel Macs support Thunderbolt 3 eGPUs (AMD only).
  • Apple Silicon: No eGPU support; uses integrated Apple GPU.

Storage Compatibility

macOS supports a wide range of storage devices, but APFS requirements vary by version and hardware.

  • APFS: Required for macOS High Sierra and later on SSDs.
  • HFS+: Supported for mechanical drives and legacy systems.
  • External drives: USB, Thunderbolt, and network storage supported.
  • Encryption: FileVault works on both Intel and Apple Silicon.

Peripheral Compatibility

macOS supports a wide range of peripherals, but some require updated drivers or specific macOS versions.

  • USB devices: Broad compatibility with keyboards, mice, storage, and audio interfaces.
  • Bluetooth: Requires Bluetooth 4.0+ for Continuity features.
  • Wi‑Fi: Continuity and Handoff require 802.11ac or newer.

  • Intel phase‑out: Newer macOS releases gradually drop older Intel Macs.
