These are the most common CPU‑related Windows hardware error codes, what they mean, and how to fix them.

Error Code What It Means Fix
0x124 – WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR General hardware failure. Often CPU, VRM, or memory controller. Remove overclock, check CPU cooling, inspect motherboard power delivery.
0x9C – MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION CPU detected a serious hardware fault (cache, bus, or ECC). Check CPU temps, reseat CPU, inspect motherboard socket and VRMs.
0x0 – Internal CPU Error CPU reported an internal execution or microcode fault. Update BIOS, reset CPU settings, check for overheating.
0xC0000005 – Access Violation CPU attempted to access invalid memory. Check RAM stability, disable CPU overclock, update chipset drivers.
0x7E – SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED CPU encountered an unhandled exception. Check CPU temps, reset BIOS, test RAM and CPU stability.
0xD1 – DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL CPU hit an invalid memory reference at high IRQL. Check CPU overclock, update drivers, test RAM.
0xF – CPU Cache Error CPU cache returned corrupted data. Lower CPU overclock, improve cooling, update BIOS.
Thermal Trip / CPU Overheat CPU exceeded safe temperature limits. Clean cooler, reapply thermal paste, improve airflow.
Microcode Update Failure CPU microcode could not be updated by BIOS. Update BIOS, reset BIOS settings, check motherboard compatibility.
CPU Bus/Interconnect Error CPU cannot communicate with chipset or memory controller. Reseat CPU, inspect socket pins, check motherboard for damage.
